Chek Lap Kok Airport

Location: Hong Kong
Architect: Foster (Asia)
Main Contractor: BCJ Joint Venture
Roof area: 156,000m
Syphonics: Fullflow

Chek Lap Kok Airport Passenger Terminal has one of the worlds largest roof areas at 156,000 m². The size of roof demanded that Fullflow develop a new rainwater outlet, Tholoflow capable of removing rainwater at a rate of 75 L/S. Independent drainage testing was required by the Project Consortium to prove the capacity of the discharge flow of up to twice the design requirement. The total number of outlets installed provided a combined capacity to discharging a massive 13,125 L/S of rainwater from the roof area. The concept of space within the building limited exposure of pipework and most of the downpipes were cast into the structural concrete columns.

Additional features required by the Mott Consortium and the architects, Foster Asia also required Fullflow to engineer the outlet to accommodate high lateral and axial movement. The engineered solution was to fit lined flexible stainless steel bellows to the base of the outlet. This was crucial in helping to avoid damage and delays just 3 weeks before the opening when the Fullflow system was tested by unprecedented violent storms.
