Leeds Station

Project: Leeds Train Station Redevelopment
Location: Leeds
Architect: Jefferson Sheard Architects (formerly EGS Design)
Contractor: Wates Construction
Syphonic Drainage: Fullflow

Between 1999 and 2002, Leeds station underwent a £245m modernisation to allow more trains to travel through and caters for faster trains. The station was expanded from 12 to 17 platforms, with the construction of new platforms on the south side. A key improvement included the replacement of the 1967 metal canopy with a new glass roof to considerably increase the amount of daylight on the platforms.

The modern roof features a syphonic drainage system designed, manufactured and installed by Fullflow. Only 17 downpipes and 2393m of pipework were required to drain rainwater from a total roof area of 21,000m2. Because the Fullflow syphonic system doesn’t rely on gravity to drain rainwater, greater flexibility in pipework and downpipe location was achieved. Additionally, cost savings were made due to the minimal number of downpipes and associated underground work required.
