The Oval, Surrey County Cricket Club

Location: London, England
Main Contractor: Taylor Woodrow
Syphonics: Fullflow

The eye-catching Vauxhall End Stand at the Oval features a syphonic drainage system, designed, manufactured and installed by Fullflow. The sweeping roof is drained of rainwater via only 27 outlets and 2 downpipes and designed to cope with a rainfall intensity of 100mm per hour. Typically, a Fullflow syphonic drainage system requires up to 80% less downpipes than a gravity system alternative.

Pipework for the Fullflow syphonic system is routed horizontally as well as vertically, providing greater flexibility and ensuring the new stand is unimpeded by unsightly and excessive pipework. A traditional system may have impaired the visual appeal of the structure due to the requirement for a greater number of downpipes and the need to route pipework on a gradient.

The steel framed structure has composite concrete floor decking and terraces constructed of pre-cast concrete units supported on steel rakers. The stadium roof was erected from steel tree columns supporting curved steel beams, with steel purlins, supporting a standing seam metal roof deck and polycarbonate roof covering. The stand’s tapered crescent shape is designed to amplify the crowd noise within the stadium.

Designed to bring spectators closer to the game, the Vauxhall End Stand provides 13,850 new seats, extensive hospitality lounges and a state-of-the-art press centre for Surrey County Cricket Club. The work was completed in 2005, increasing capacity to around 23,000.
