The Millennium Stadium

Location: Cardiff, Wales
Architect: Lobb Sports Architecture
Main Contractor: John Laing Construction Ltd

Opened in late 1999, the Millennium Stadium is the largest project of its type in the UK to date, seating up to 75,000 spectators. As a replacement to the world renowned Cardiff Arms Park, the Millennium Stadium posed two main problems to the designers. Firstly, the roof closes effectively doubling the surface area and second, in order to reduce discharge into the nearby River Taff a recycling system had to be devised to irrigate the pitch. The design team of Lobb Architects, W S Atkins along with the main Contractor Laing Management turned to Fullflow for assistance.

The solution provided by Fullflow was to treat each element of the roof separately, which would then combine to drain the 28,900 m² roof area as it closed. With design rainfall intensities of 184 mm/hr for the North Stand and 75 mm/hr for the remainder of the stadium, the system is capable of draining a maximum 820 L/S.
