Syphonic Drainage: Fullflow
Syphonic drainage specialist Fullflow has recently completed the design, manufacture and installation of a syphonic drainage system for the stunning new visitor centre at Savill Garden within Windsor Great Park, London.
Designed by Architects Glenn Howells the modern structure features an undulating leaf shaped roof, nearly 100m in length and constructed from larch and clad with green oak from The Crown Estate’s own sustainable sources from the Windsor Estate. The eco friendly building with its grid shell timber roof (the largest of its type in the UK) required a flexible drainage system which could remove rainwater efficiently from the roof without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the building.

The solution was to use Fullflow’s syphonic drainage system requiring fewer downpipes of smaller diameter than a traditional drainage system. Coupled with the ability to route pipework horizontally, this reduction in downpipe quantity and diameter size provided the Architect with greater flexibility as the overall design was not compromised by large and unsightly pipework. Additionally less materials, inspection points and underground work was required.
Jamie Webb, Architect for Glenn Howells Architects comments:
“The Fullflow syphonic system was chosen because of the aesthetic benefits it provided. A reduced number of rainwater downpipes and smaller pipe diameters aided the design and visual appeal of the building.”

The centre’s syphonic drainage system was designed for the maximum rainfall likely to occur in a 37.5 year period. This was achieved with only ten rainwater outlets and four downpipes, draining an approximate total roof area of 2,000 sq. metres, at a flow rate of approximately 100 litres per second.
Savill Garden Visitor Centre provides a new entrance to The Savill Garden and the gateway to The Royal Landscape, a unique man-made landscape located in the south-east corner of The Crown Estate's Windsor Great Park. His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened The Savill Building on the 26/06/06.
Fullflow boasts an unparalleled level of experience in the field of syphonic drainage having successfully installed over 30,000 systems across the world.
