Lok Ma Chau Terminus Features Fullflow Syphonic Drainage
Syphonic drainage specialists Fullflow designed, manufactured and supplied a syphonic drainage system for GELEC (HK) Limited who undertook the installation, for the new Lok Ma Chau Spur Line checkpoint and public transport interchange in Hong Kong. The new terminal lies on the Hong Kong side of the border crossing over the Shenzhen River which separates Hong Kong from China.
Fullflow designed the syphonic drainage system for the main terminal building which has a roof area of approximately 24,500m² and was designed to drain up to 316 mm/hr/m². The syphonic drainage system includes 45 HDPE downpipes and 136 outlets (56 PVC coated aluminium outlets and 80 grade 316 stainless steel outlets) which help protect against resistance and corrosion. The HDPE downpipes, as requested by the Architect, were cast in columns within the terminal building so as to retain the aesthetic appeal. To ensure that the downpipes and the syphonic system would not be damaged from the pressure of the cast columns, they were filled with water and pressurised with air prior to pouring the concrete for the columns. This caused some early problems for Fullflow as the columns were erected in stages in line with the building construction programme.
Simon Li, Construction Division Manager on behalf of GELEC (HK) Limited commented:
“We, (GELEC (HK) Limited), were fortunate to have worked with Fullflow on the challenging Lok Ma Chau Terminus project. Working with overseas suppliers is not easy as we have different culture, language, time zone, contract and working practices. However, with the extensive experience, expertise, understanding, commitment and support from Fullflow, we could resolve all the problems and achieve and complete this tight programmed project on schedule."
Construction of the four-level building Lok Ma Chau terminal, which occupies approximately nine hectares began in January 2003 and was opened to the public on the 15th August 2007. It is the second railway link between Hong Kong and China and will relieve the traffic congestion at Lo Wu Station. Fitted with 136 counters at the immigration hall, the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point will be able to handle up to about 150,000 passengers a day.
